Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center performances, an opera in the making, and more

Manuel Barrueco, a guitarist and a faculty artist, and Peabody alums Ricardo Cobo and David Tanenbaum honored Aaron Shearer, their former teacher, on the centennial of his birth in a Carnegie Hall concert in late June titled "Aaron Shearer Virtuosos." Shearer founded the Peabody Conservatory Guitar Department and is recognized as the father of classical guitar pedagogy.

Serap Bastepe-Gray, a faculty artist, had an article published in the Arts Biomechanics Journal about playing-related injury research. "Improving Musicians' Occupational Health: A Proposal for New Perspectives" discusses the diagnoses of playing-related injuries and how to improve musician self-reporting.

Du Yun, a faculty artist and composer, has received a grant from Opera America for her opera Sweet Land, which will premiere with the Industry in Los Angeles in February 2020. This is the fifth cycle of commissioning grants from the organization's Opera Grants for Female Composers. Recipients are given up to 50 percent of the composer's fee for a full production of a commissioned work.

Sean Jones, who holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies, returned to Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he was an orchestra member, to perform at its Dizzy's Club in late June. In the program called "Dizzy Spellz," the music and life story of Dizzy Gillespie are used as a lens to explore an intersection of cultural and spiritual dilemmas within the African diaspora. The performance also featured turntablist and faculty artist Wendel Patrick.

Jeff Stern, a faculty artist and percussionist, is a member of the icarus Quartet, a group of two percussionists and two pianists. iQ won the Chamber Music in Yellow Springs' 34th Annual Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles, held in April.

Elijah Wirth, head of the Preparatory's Music Theory Department, was presented with the Suzanne Seff Kuff Excellence in Teaching Award by the Peabody Preparatory. Wirth also leads the Wind, Brass and Percussion Academy and is the director of the Peabody Preparatory Wind Orchestra, which played at the award ceremony under Wirth's direction.
