The Ninth Annual Marian House Race to Embrace Independence 5K Run and Walk is coming up in September, and Johns Hopkins is again organizing Team Hopkins to raise awareness and funds for the organization—and to get a little exercise and do some Hopkins team building, too.

Marian House is a holistic, healing community for women and their children who are in need of housing and support services.

"It's located behind Johns Hopkins at Eastern, so these women and children are part of our Hopkins community," says Jennifer Mielke, director of Local and Community Affairs for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine. "This is Marian House's only major fundraiser, so employees' and students' support is needed."   Last year 100 Johns Hopkins affiliates participated as part of Team Hopkins, and organizers hope to grow the number this year.

The race will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23—the President's Day of Service for the Johns Hopkins community—at Lake Montebello. Entry fees are $35 ($40 after Sept. 14) for the 5K Run, 5K Walk, and adults in the Family Fun Run; $20 for a child under 11 in the Family Fun Run. Children 2 and under can participate for free.

More information about the event is available on the Run and Walk website.

After you register, a prompt will appear that says "To Join a Team, Click Here." Click that and find Team Hopkins.

In addition to the official Marian House 5K race shirt, participants will receive a Team Hopkins T-shirt to wear on race day. These shirts will be fitted, male- and female-sized shirts, so you should order one size up if you prefer a loose fit. Mielke asks that Johns Hopkins participants email her at CommRelations@jhu.edu with their T-shirt size.   Those who cannot join the race on Sept. 23 are asked to consider donating to Team Hopkins for Marian House.
