Compost, recycling, trash? Learn how to solve the mystery of what goes where

Have you ever had that moment standing dumbfounded in front of different-colored waste bins, trying to decide where exactly to toss out your item? The good news is that a little simple education can go a long way in understanding how to sort among compost, recycling, and trash.

The Johns Hopkins University Office of Sustainability will be helping out next week through a series of events that includes Waste Sorting 101 workshops open to staff, faculty, and students across all Hopkins campuses.

The trainings not only will help clear up confusion but also will share insight on where waste goes when it leaves our campuses, and how to reduce the environmental and social impact of what we consume and discard. See below for exact locations and times for these events, which take place April 17 to 21 as part of Earth Week. Most are 30- or 60-minute trainings; APL and Nursing will have information available at tables staffed by the offices of Sustainability and Recycling.

In another step to guide everyone through the process, the Sustainability Office recently rolled out new signs with clear visuals and labels to be displayed on or near waste bins. If they're not on your campus already, look out for them within the next few months.

During the last fiscal year, the university recycled and composted 43 percent of its waste, and looks poised to do even better in 2017. Through efforts like these, Johns Hopkins' commitment to reducing the waste that goes into polluting incinerators or landfills is clear. (More information on Johns Hopkins' efforts to reduce waste is available here.) What part will you play?
