With Memorial Day just around the corner, it's high time to find a pool. For Johns Hopkins employees, there's one great option for outdoor swimming and lounging right at the Denton A. Cooley Center on the East Baltimore campus.
The JHMI Alumni Pool at 1620 McElderry St. opens for the season on Monday, May 30, with discounted season passes available through May 29. Although the Cooley Center traditionally caters to the medical community at Hopkins, pool access is open to all Hopkins employees and affiliates, whether you're a Cooley member or not.
The pool offers four 25-yard lap lanes, a deep end, and a wading section, along with a deck area, locker rooms, showers, and towel rentals. It's open through Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
For those interested in morning lap swims, the pool opens early for that purpose on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Water aerobics classes are also offered throughout the summer, with the schedule posted on the Cooley Center's fitness calendar.
For season passes, price packages vary from $50 to $230 based on your affiliation with Hopkins and the bundle you want; a regular single pass for an employee is $110, and passes for couples and families are also available. Children under 6 get in for free. The early-season discounts slash $10 from each type of pass.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a more casual arrangement, you can always opt for a day pass ($8 each visit) or for a 10-visit pass ($65).
Know someone who's learning to swim? Certain lifeguards are available for private lessons; contact the Cooley Center at 410-955-2513 for more information.
