BLC Plaza staircase removal and MSEL fencing adjustment

As part of the MSE Library Modernization project, starting on Monday, Jan. 19, the construction fencing will be adjusted and the marble staircase at the Brody Learning Commons Plaza area will be removed.

Key information:

Date/Time of Operation:

  • Start date: Monday, Jan. 19, from approx. 7 a.m. to noon—Installation of additional fencing to expand the limits of construction.
  • End Date: Oct. 28—Fencing to remain in place through the end of the MSEL project.

Scope of work:

  • Expansion of the current construction fencing at the BLC plaza to facilitate paver demolition and removal of the existing marble staircase.
  • Per the MSEL project design, the marble staircase will not be reinstalled; a new brick wall will be constructed in its place.
  • All associated demolition and replacement work will take place within the newly established Limits of Disturbance.

Paths impacted:

  • The existing shortcut across the BLC overhead protection (from east to west side) will no longer be accessible to pedestrians.
  • Pedestrians will be rerouted along the main sidewalk path beneath the overhead protection.

Safety measures:

  • Spotters will be stationed at the east and west ends of the BLC plaza during fence installation to temporarily stop foot traffic.
  • Clear fencing layouts and updated path demarcation will be implemented per the logistics plan below.

The logistics plan is available at this link.
