Hopkins Office for Undergraduate Research offers its Fall 2025 Workshop Series featuring hands-on assistance with identifying and securing academic year and summer research opportunities. Students can go beyond what's offered on HOUR's website and get customized, hands-on practice with the resources, tips, and best practices HOUR offers in these workshop sessions. Week 1 (Nov. 10-14): Fall and Spring Research Opportunities

Part 1: Identify and Secure Research

    1. Clarify your 'must haves' and 'dealbreakers' before you begin your search.
    1. Tips for optimizing your search in ForagerOne.
    1. Where/how to find more information about potential mentors and their projects.
    1. Best practices for contacting potential mentors.
    1. Manage the process …. and your expectations.

Offered: Monday, Nov. 10, 7-9 p.m., or Tuesday, Nov. 11, 7-9 p.m.

Part 2: Optimize Your Resumé

Best practices specifically for undergraduates seeking research opportunities, including:

  • Resumé vs. CV
  • Present yourself as a qualified candidate
  • Identify and highlight your skills
  • Format for the benefit of your reader
  • Exploit bullet points to your best advantage
  • Don't overstate—but don't sell yourself short

Week 2 (Nov. 17-21): Summer Research Opportunities

Part 1: Identify and Select Summer Opportunities

    1. Understand summer timelines
    1. Know the range of opportunities available
    1. Exploit search engines and platforms
    1. Manage the process …. and your expectations.

Part 2: Effectively Apply for Summer Opportunities

HOUR's tips and tricks can help optimize your chances for success when applying to summer research opportunities by avoiding the most common blunders and following best practices.

Offered: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7-9 p.m., or Thursday, Nov. 20, 7-9 p.m.

  • Registration is limited to full time JHU undergrads only.
  • All sessions are virtual (Eastern time).
  • Sessions include hands-on activities to conduct your own individualized searches/editing.
  • These sessions will not be recorded.
  • Registration required for each session.
