Campus fire safety tip: Update your personal fire emergency plan

Take a moment today to review and update your personal fire emergency plan. Knowing what to do before an emergency can save lives.

If you have an disability or may need assistance during an evacuation, plan ahead by identifying your nearest exits and informing a colleague or instructor. During a fire alarm, do not use elevators. If you cannot evacuate, move to an area away from the hazards and call Public Safety or 911 with your location.

In Case of Fire or Alarm Activation:

Follow the R.A.C.E. protocol:

  • R—Rescue anyone in immediate danger (only if safe to do so)
  • A—Alarm: Pull the nearest fire alarm and call Public Safety or 911
  • C—Confine fire and smoke by closing doors
  • E—Evacuate the building immediately

Do NOT use elevators.

For teaching and research laboratories:

If there is a fire: Do not attempt to extinguish the fire unless trained to do so.

  • If safe, close fume hood sashes
  • Evacuate immediately—do not stop for personal items
  • Pull the fire alarm and notify the instructor if possible
  • Proceed directly to your designated assembly area
  • Remain at least 50 feet from the building
  • Contact Public Safety Emergency: 410-516-7777
  • Keep students at the assembly area and conduct a headcount
  • Follow instructions from Public Safety or your instructor

If a person is on fire: - STOP, DROP, and ROLL to extinguish flames

Evacuation procedures for all occupants: + Evacuate immediately when the fire alarm sounds. Take all alarms seriously. + Use emergency stairways only; do not use elevators + Notify Public Safety of anyone needing evacuation assistance

Stay prepared. Know your exits. Practice your plan.
