Levering Hall roof replacement

Construction on the Levering Hall roof replacement project is about to begin. This critical infrastructure upgrade is needed to protect this landmark building on the JHU Homewood campus. After coordination with various JHU stakeholders and planning with the contractor, JHFRE adopted the following workplan:

Typical daily work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The work is divided into four designated areas, as noted on the logistics plan, starting on roof area 1 and moving in numerical sequence. Prior to work commencing, perimeter barriers will be established, signage installed, and scaffolding erected to promote safety for all JHU affiliates and contractors.

This work is typically disruptive due to the following activities:

  • Deliveries of scaffolding and roofing materials, which are coordinated with JHU Dining Services
  • Noise from handling of materials when the scaffolding is erected around the building
  • Roofing work will include intermittent levels of demolition related to removal of the existing roofs, accompanied by construction noise that may peak at times but will not be entirely consistent throughout the day
  • Potential running of air compressors and generators throughout the project, combined with the use of pneumatic and gas impact tools
  • Wood on wood material handling resulting from work on the roof substrate
  • Beeping and backup alarms from delivery trucks

The goal is to work as quickly as possible to get the job wrapped up in the shortest amount of time. The projected duration is from June 18 through Sept. 26. As this schedule is an outdoor project, it is contingent on weather. We will also comply with Baltimore City noise ordinances.
