Each year Space@Hopkins awards seed grants to enable Johns Hopkins researchers to test and develop new ideas that enhance their ability to obtain external funding. For 2024 Space@Hopkins will fund four teams, including researchers from the School of Medicine (SoM), Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS), and the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE).
The four projects awarded new seed grants are:
"Did Eukaryotic Diversification in Earth's Early Planetary Environment Occur in Terrestrial or Marine Settings?"
PI: Emmy Smith (KSAS: Earth and Planetary Sciences).
Co-Is: Ken Livi (WSE: Material Science and Engineering).
Natalia Drichko (KSAS: Physics and Astronomy).
"Enhancing Slow-wave Sleep During Space Travel Using AI-Driven Acoustic Stimulation and Active Body Cooling"
PI: Matthew Reid (SoM, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences)
Co-Is: Michael Smith (SoM, Division of Behavioral Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Bayview)
William Coon (APL: Research and Exploratory Development and WSE: Applied Biomedical Engineering)
"Preparing to Untangle the Gravitational Wave Cacophony from Multivariate Data for the LISA Space Mission"
PI: Emanuele Berti (KSAS: Physics and Astronomy)
"Pharmacological Strategy to Promote Proteostasis and Mitochondrial Health in Space Radiation-Induced Stress"
PI: Mark Ranek (SoM, Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, Cardiology)
Co-I: Kenneth Boheler (SoM, Biomedical Engineering)
Since 2016 Space@Hopkins has served as an umbrella organization to connect civilian space research across all Johns Hopkins divisions. All Space@Hopkins seed grants provide undergraduate research opportunities as a program requirement.
Applications for the next round of Space@Hopkins seed grants will open during the spring 2025 semester. For additional information, contact the Space@Hopkins Space Fellow, Caleigh Ryan, at spacestudies@jhu.edu. Further information about Space@Hopkins can be found on our website here.
