Dr. Raven "The Science Maven" Baxter, internationally acclaimed American Educator, and molecular biologist, remixed Megan Thee Stallion's "Body" song simply to help one of her students on their final exam, but her real motivation? To merge science with pop culture and make it fun. Her innovative and energetic music videos and STEM-themed talk show, "The STEMbassy," are drawing together scientists and curious audiences from all walks of life. This is why PHutures is so excited to welcome Dr. Baxter to a Fireside chat on Thurs, October 14th at 5 pm EST. Registration can be found here
"We're hoping that a conversation with Dr. Baxter will introduce audience members to new and avant-garde approaches to communicating scientific disciplines and their value to a broad public," explains Dr. Christine Kelly, Associate Director of PHutures. "She also resists notions that building a robust career as an academically trained scientist requires conformity with a narrow definition of academic socialization. We're hoping that engagement with Dr. Baxter will help the audience not only embrace a more inclusive understanding of scientific fields and those who practice them but that they might be inspired to forge new paths of their own within this space!"
During the Fireside Chat, attendees are welcome to bring their own questions to the table and discuss topics that range from Dr. Baxter's motivations behind science education and her public outreach to developing original content and ideas, managing work and life, strategies to communicate complex topics to varied audiences, and managing critical feedback.
Dr. Baxter is a sought-after public speaker who maintains a strong voice in science academia as the Director of Diversity Initiatives in the UC Irvine School of Biological Sciences. She has earned numerous awards for her achievements, including the State University of New York's Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence in honor of her service in educating the public about COVID-19, and recognition on Fortune Magazine's 40 Under 40 list.
