Zoom interview opportunity for East Asian international students

Michael Tan, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, and a team are currently conducting a study on the experience of East Asian international students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is titled "Examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on East Asian international students in the United States" (Institutional Review Board reference number: HIRB00011837, PI: Dr. Yiying Xiong).

The study team is recruiting eligible participants for a 60-minute interview to talk about the challenges, feelings and thoughts, coping, and support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview will be audio-recorded but will be kept confidential by the study team, which is seeking 12-15 participants. Those who complete the full interview will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. Please email Michael at htan25@jhu.edu to indicate your interest in participating in this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Have citizenship in one of the following countries and regions: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, South Korea, Taiwan
  • Are a full-time student at Johns Hopkins University (regardless of study level) and have attended full time at least since the spring 2020 semester
  • Have been in the U.S. for at least six months since March 1, 2020

To avoid multiple relationships (e.g., teacher/student, supervisor/supervisee, colleague/classmate, etc.) between the researchers and participants, participants will not be recruited from the Master's in Counseling program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

Please complete the survey here to check your eligibility for participation in this study. It will take no more than two minutes to complete. No identifying information will be collected in this survey. You will be asked whether you give us permission to contact you through email if you are eligible to participate, and you may enter your email address if you do.

You will receive a notice about your eligibility after you complete the survey. If you are eligible, you will be sent the informed consent for this study. If you would like to participate and schedule a time for the interview, please 1) download the informed consent form, 2) read through the consent form carefully, 3) sign the last page of the form, and 4) send the signed form as an electronic file (PDF, JPEG, etc.) to htan25@jhu.edu. Once you complete these steps, the research team will contact you with further instructions for scheduling the interview.

If you are NOT eligible for this study, you will not receive the consent form, and no further steps need to be taken. The information you entered in the screening survey will remain anonymous.

Although you may not benefit directly from your participation, we are hoping to use our findings from this study to increase public awareness about the unique set of challenges East Asian international students have to face during this time of crisis, and to inspire service and support from universities and colleges that properly address these issues.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at htan25@jhu.edu or contact the principal investigator, Yiying Xiong, at yxiong@jhu.edu to learn more about the details of this study and how to participate.
