The nomination period for the 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service is now open. If you know someone who demonstrates Dr. King's values of service, equality, and selflessness through their volunteerism, or if you embody these values and work, you are asked to submit a nomination.
You can recommend any JHU or JHM faculty or staff member, graduate student, postdoc, or resident—including yourself—as well as anyone regularly assigned to work at Johns Hopkins through affiliated organizations, for this prestigious award. Over the years, recipients have been recognized for important work that includes helping women prevent homelessness and mentoring students. Four recipients from the university and four from the health system will be selected.
New this year: One of the organizations at which an honoree volunteers will be chosen to receive $5,000. The organization must hold a 501(c)(3) tax code designation or use a 501(c)(3) as a fiscal agent.
In the past, these awards were presented at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, held in Turner Auditorium on the East Baltimore campus. As Johns Hopkins continues to practice safety protocols owing to COVID-19, the university and health system will be planning activities to safely celebrate the 2020 honorees and commemorate the life of Dr. King. Details will be provided in the near future.
The online nomination form must be completed by Friday, Nov. 6. A review panel composed of Johns Hopkins employees will make the final selections in November.
