Mr. Johns Hopkins, founder of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, was born on May 19, 1795, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. In the 1820s, he embarked on a career as a merchant, investor, and financier that saw him amass a fortune worth $8 million (over $186 million in 2020) upon his death in December 1873. Of this total, $1 million was distributed among family, associates, and employees, with the remaining $7 million divided equally to form the endowment for the hospital and the university. After his death, his hand-picked trustees began forming the two institutions. So, Happy 225th Birthday, Mr. Hopkins!
