Experiencing overwhelming high stress or strong emotions, such as sadness, anger, guilt, and shame, can all have a significant effect on an individual's functioning, whether at work or outside of work. Challenges can arise when individuals with emotional pain turn to maladaptive coping strategies, such as alcohol and substances, overeating, and gambling to "get by" or "cope."
