Healthy participants with fair skin needed for a research study

This study is investigating two over-the-counter nutritional supplements to find out whether the active ingredients (sulforaphane from broccoli and curcumin from the spice turmeric) can protect the skin from damage caused by aging and UV irradiation.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 70
  • No recent or current antibiotic use
  • No regular use of certain medications or supplements
  • No smokers or other tobacco use

In summary, participation in this study will involve:

  • Two blood draws
  • Ten days of Crucera-SGSTM® and/or Meriva-SF® supplements
  • Three weeks of cruciferous-free diet (no vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc., or condiments such as mustard, horseradish, or wasabi)
  • Two sets of urine collections
  • Up to six punch biopsies
  • Two sets of 10 irradiated spots on your back the size of a nickel and measurements for three days each time
  • Eight study visits to JHMI campus; most are very brief
