Study seeks pregnant women planning to deliver at Johns Hopkins Hospital

Study Purpose

To determine whether fluoride supplementation during pregnancy supports the growth of beneficial oral bacteria that can protect against dental caries, as well as certain infections that can potentially cause preterm labor

Study Procedure

Participants, who must be between 10 and 20 weeks of gestation, will be randomly assigned to Group 1 (take prenatal vitamins with 3 mg fluoride added) or Group 2 (take prenatal vitamins without fluoride).

  • Blood
  • Urine
  • Oral & vaginal swabs (self-collected)
  • Placental samples (delivery only)
  • Umbilical cord blood (delivery only)

Compensation up to $125.
