Homewood-area road closures Saturday, Oct. 21: Baltimore Marathon

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

The Baltimore Marathon takes place this Saturday, Oct. 21, and runners will pass near the Homewood campus early in the race and again with just a few miles to go.

You are invited to come out and cheer for the competitors, but you should also note that some roads in the vicinity will be closed at points throughout the day and some street parking may be restricted. Your ability to drive to or from campus, or park nearby, may be affected.

There are changes in the marathon course this year, and some of those occur near the Homewood campus.

The Baltimore Running Festival website includes a new interactive course map as well as a traditional PDF course map.

There is also a street-by-street, turn-by-turn description of the course, with route changes highlighted.

Information on street closings and parking restrictions is also online.

You can also find an online estimate of the time ranges when runners will be at various points along the course.

The course approaches the university between mile markers 5 and 6 (Druid Hill Park to Wyman Park Drive, right turn to go past the university's South Gate and South Garage, then right turn onto Art Museum Drive, straight ahead onto Howard Street and then left on 28th Street).

It then approaches the campus again between mile markers 23 and 24 (west on 33rd Street, left on Guilford Avenue, right on 29th Street, cross Charles Street, run past the south end of Wyman Park Dell and then turn left on Maryland Avenue to go south).

The highest concentrations of runners in our area are expected from 8:25 to 9:51 a.m. and, later on along the course, from 9:55 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

We would expect that Wyman Park Drive from Remington Avenue to West 28th Street will close to vehicle traffic or experience lane closures from 8:25 to at least 9:51 a.m. Also, 28th Street from Howard Street to St. Paul Street will have closures from about 8:35 to 10:07 a.m. St. Paul will be affected from 28th Street south from about 8:40 to 10:23 a.m.

Farther along on the course, 33rd Street from Lake Montebello to Guilford Avenue will be affected from about 9:20 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Guilford from 33rd to 29th will be affected from about 9:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; 29th from Guilford to Maryland will be affected from about 9:55 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Maryland Avenue from 29th Street south to Cathedral Street will have closures from about 10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

Cross streets are likely to be affected throughout the closure periods.

Sincerely,

Dennis O'Shea Office of Communications dro@jhu.edu
