mActive-Smoke Study: The association between physical activity and smoking urges

In mActive-Smoke Study, we are interested in evaluating the relationship between physical activity and smoking urges. Participants wear a Fitbit Charge HR during the day and report their smoking urges by text messages. Participants should be older than 18 years, have a smartphone, and be smokers of more than three cigarettes per day. Participants can keep the Fitbit after six weeks. Additionally, they receive $40 if they continue for another six weeks.

Fitbit Charge HR is a smart activity tracker that measures step count, real-time heart rate, exercise time, burned calories, and sleep quality. A video with more information on Fitbit Charge HR is online.

Reporting your smoking urges is simple. We send three text messages per day and ask participants to report their smoking urges on a scale from 1 to 9, with 9 indicating the highest urge for smoking. Participants can tell us when they want to receive text messages. For more information, please see a PowerPoint presentation on our official website.
