Every caregiver, whether we are family, friend, or professional, in his or her own way, is both a counselor and a care manager. This course offers a step-by-step approach to counseling and care management with older adults. Participants will learn to recognize and understand nonverbal communication to remember, identify, and respond to feelings, both their own and those of the elders. On this foundation participants will then learn the Elder Care Family Consultation model upon which care management begins. Issues, options, decisions, and resources will be discussed as well as how to list and explore alternatives while communicating about these sensitive subjects. Pertinent handouts, experiential exercises, and film will be used.
