Seeking volunteers for a research study on albinism

This is a randomized double-blind clinical trial of lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation and its effect on macular pigment in albinism. Who is eligible?

  • People diagnosed with albinism
  • At least 12 years old
  • Visual acuity of 20/200 or better in at least one eye
  • Willing to take lutein + zeaxanthin (or placebo) supplements for one year

What will you be asked to do?

Screening will include visual function testing, ocular exam, ocular imaging, blood test, and your medical history collection.

This is a full-day visit (or two half-day visits). If you qualify for this research study, you will receive the study medication (either lutein + zeaxanthin or placebo), and you will be coming approximately every three months for study visits. On each visit, some of the procedures (imaging and visual function tests) performed on the enrollment visit will be repeated. Each visit will last two and a half to four hours.

Participants will receive $120 for each fully completed study visit, $50 for meals and parking expenses per visit, and traveling expenses.
