Introduction to Screenwriting for Film and Television:
This working seminar will introduce writers to what they need to know to write a full-length screenplay. We will cover professional screenplay format, the proper definition of a scene, the crucial differences between cinematic and theatrical dialogue, and how to create compelling, three-dimensional, and memorable characters; story structure; text and subtext; plot points; and cinematic pacing. Many film clips will be shown and analyzed to illustrate these points. The seminar focuses on writing and group discussions in a constructive and supportive environment. Advanced Screenwriting for Film and Television:
This seminar gives participants the opportunity to pitch and workshop their ideas for a short script-in-progress. Copies are distributed to each student, and we will read each script excerpt aloud and then discuss and closely analyze what we've read as a group, with each writer having ample opportunity to ask questions. This Advanced Screenwriting Workshop is designed as a graduate screenwriting seminar. Every screenplay needs a clever story idea or hook to keep its audience guessing; audiences expect a compelling story with surprising twists, dimensional characters, a pervading sense of mystery, and strong dialogue that culminates in a rewarding evening of cinema. Current marketplace requirements as well as national screenwriting contest information will also be covered. Estimated course material fee is $30.
