As construction progresses on the new Homewood Early Learning Center on the Johns Hopkins campus, families may now apply for their children to attend in fall 2015.
The center, at the corner of Wyman Park Drive and Remington Avenue, will offer a nurturing, high-quality environment where children will have the time and space to develop at their own paces. Downtown Baltimore Child Care Inc. has been selected to manage the center, and its staff is looking forward to welcoming children ages 10 weeks through preschool with the philosophy that childhood is a journey and not a race.
The center will accommodate up to 94 children and will be open to all families, including community members. Priority admission will be given to Johns Hopkins employees based on the Homewood campus and then to other Johns Hopkins families. The center has a target opening date of Aug. 24, 2015. The exact opening date will be confirmed in April 2015.
Through purposeful play, each child can explore what he or she cares about—be it dragonflies, dinosaurs, backhoes, or Winnie the Pooh. Making play dough helps children learn the science of mixing and heating. Blocks teach symmetry, gravity, design, and math concepts such as fractions.
While they play, children also learn colors, shapes, letters, and executive function skills like reasoning, problem-solving, and planning. And they learn to make choices and navigate relationships.
