On the night of Dec. 3, 1984, 27 tons of methyl isocyanide leaked out of Union Carbide onto the sleeping population of Bhopal. + 8,000 died instantly + 500,000 were poisoned + 22,000 have died so far + 150,000 left disabled due to injuries + Children born to survivors suffer from debilitating diseases + Disaster site has not yet been cleaned
Why did this happen? Because of greed and negligence. The safety systems were turned off as part of cost-cutting. That, too, in a plant that was built using an unproven and untested technology.
The court settlement compensated the survivors with a mere sum of $500, further adding insult to injury. This sum is not sufficient for a few months of medical treatment. And most of these people cannot be cured and need lifelong assistance and treatments.
It is not far-fetched to imagine that this plant could have been in your town or city, and you could have just as easily become one of these victims.
