29th Street Community Center 1st Oktoberfest, Oct. 25

Johns Hopkins University is a proud supporter of the 29th Street Community Center (a recently closed Baltimore City rec center) and invites you to join the 29th Street Community Center Community Council at Peabody Heights Brewery on Oct. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. for an entertaining evening of craft beer tastings, brewery tours, food, music, and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit the 29th Street Community Center's general operations, building maintenance, and programs serving the north central Baltimore community.

For $40, you get three tasting tickets and one pint ticket for beers from Peabody Heights' many amazing brewers, a souvenir pint glass, and delectable German cuisine. Buy your tickets before Sept. 23, and you'll receive one extra pint ticket!

In 2011, the Barclay Recreation Center on 300 E. 29th Street was closed by the city's Department of Recreation and Parks. After years of underuse, what had once been a thriving community space was little more than a dilapidated building. That's when Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) stepped in—as a convener of people and catalyst for change. With the steadfast support of community residents and other stakeholders, GHCC proposed to restore and reopen the Barclay Recreation Center. The city agreed and gave them the keys.

Fast forward two years: the newly named 29th Street Community Center is once again brimming with life and is a safe and vibrant space that offers high-quality, low-cost daily programming—much of which is community-led—to more than 300 people a week!

Come celebrate their success and help them continue to serve the children and families of Charles Village, Harwood, Barclay, Abell, Oakenshawe, Waverly, and Better Waverly communities.
