Baltimoreans spent the past week swapping snow-shoveling stories, but the hardworking crew at Johns Hopkins University Athletics has everyone beat: The team cleared nearly a foot of snow across 60,000 square feet of turf on Homewood Field ahead the men's lacrosse team's season-opener against Robert Morris. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, at noon.
Think of it as the faceoff before the season's first faceoff. The entire operation started early on Sunday, Jan. 25, said Ernie Larossa, associate director of athletics and director of athletic communications. While the snow and sleet were still falling, the crew began the days-long task of carefully removing snow, first plowing the turf then raking it once the surface of the turf started to emerge—similar to the grounds crew raking the dirt on the field during an Orioles game—all under the direction of Julie Toland, associate athletic director for facilities and events, and Maggie Heverly, assistant athletic director for facilities and events.
All the while, fellow team members took to the stands with shovels to clear the seats for spectators. So while we shiver and cheer on the Jays next week, let's give a shout out to the team behind the team that gladly answered the traditional Hopkins call of "we want more!"
