About 60 Johns Hopkins University students gathered in the the LaB on the Homewood campus Tuesday night to watch Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in their first debate of the 2024 election cycle.
Attendees enjoyed dinner by the Mera Kitchen Collective, a community-driven, worker-owned, food-based cooperative in Baltimore, and snacks. Students played a nonpartisan bingo game while watching the debate, crossing off buzzwords, phrases, and mannerisms like "gun control", "electoral college", and "eye roll by either candidate" as they happened in real time to win prizes.
The event was hosted by Hopkins Votes, a universitywide initiative under the Center for Social Concern, a department within Student Affairs, and the JHU chapter of IDEAL, a national student organization that fosters civil discourse and civic engagement at high schools and universities.
Hopkins Votes was recently recognized for its ongoing efforts to promote student voter engagement, earning a Highly Established Action Plan Seal from the All-In Campus Democracy Challenge.
Additional election season events are planned this fall, including National Voter Registration Day festivities on the Beach and a dinner discussion unpacking Project 2025, both on Sept. 17.
Johns Hopkins University is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit institution that does not endorse or oppose any candidate for public office.
