Milestones amplify findings of Johns Hopkins study validating the effectiveness of the violence reduction program

Three Safe Streets Baltimore neighborhoods across the city recently celebrated more than a year without a single homicide, a milestone that bolsters the findings of a recent Johns Hopkins analysis showing that "Safe Streets saves lives."

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced the news last week in a post on X in which he wrote, "Yesterday was a great day in Park Heights as we celebrate not just one, but three, Safe Streets sites that have achieved over 365 days without a homicide in their respective catchment zones."

"This achievement is personal, having grown up in Park Heights, today is a testament to the life-saving work that our Safe Streets staff do every day," the mayor continued. "To our Belvedere, Park Heights, and Franklin Square teams, thank you for putting yourselves in harm's way to prevent violence in this community."

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Gun Violence Solutions praised the community violence intervention program focused on reducing gun violence for achieving the milestone.

"Celebration of Safe Streets' efforts to prevent homicides in the communities that they serve is fitting," said Daniel Webster, distinguished research scholar for the Center for Gun Violence Solutions in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "Despite decades of disinvestment and deep challenges in communities that have long experienced devastating loss of life due to violence, research by my colleagues and me at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions confirms that Safe Streets saves lives. Baltimore's investment in a public health model for community violence intervention is paying dividends and making communities safer."
