Women's lacrosse: Hopkins can't hang with Navy in NCAA first-round loss

Heldberg, Fitzgerald score three goals apiece in season-ending 16-9 defeat

The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end Friday night with a 16-9 loss against No. 7 Navy in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Blue Jays (10-9) surrendered the game's first three goals, fought back to within a goal at 5-4, then were on the short side of an 11-2 Navy run that put the game out of reach. The Middies went one to defeat host Loyola in the second round on Sunday, setting up a quarterfinal showdown against top-seeded Maryland. Complete NCAA tournament bracket

Sophomore Mackenzie Heldberg scored three goals for Hopkins, giving her 41 on the season. She became the 10th player in JHU Division I team history to reach the 40-goal mark.

Senior Shannon Fitzgerald also had three goals in her final game, and sophomore Maggie Schneidereith added two goals, giving her 39 on the season.
