Stuff to do

Weekend picks: Johns Hopkins events roundup for Sept. 29-Oct.1

There are lots of things to do this weekend. These are some of our favorites.

Leaves are falling and temperatures are cooling off as we enter the month of pumpkin spice and Halloween. Enjoy this weekend's short lineup of events—jam sessions, water polo, or outreach activities—while taking in the perfect autumn weather.

A GOOD CAUSE

Puerto Rico hurricane relief bake sale
Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | The Breezeway
A lot of us are wondering how we can help Puerto Rico—here is one option. A couple of Puerto Rican Blue Jays have come together to raise awareness and support for the island in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. They will sell baked goods and collect donations that will benefit United for Puerto Rico.

ARTS + CULTURE

Witness Theater 2017 Fall Showcase
All weekend | Swirnow Theater
The student-run organization that writes, directs, and produces its own plays will put on a variety of shows from Friday to Sunday. Admission costs less than a Starbucks Grande Salted Caramel Mocha.

Archiving the Black Arts Movement and Beyond
Friday, 4:30 p.m. | Gilman Hall
A panel of scholars including poet-activist Sonia Sanchez will investigate the challenging circumstances around archiving the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

ATHLETICS

Men's water polo vs. Wagner
Saturday, 7 p.m. | White Athletic Center
Cheer on the men's water polo team as its challenges the Wagner College Seahawks. This is a key conference match for the Blue Jays during a full weekend of action.

GOOD OL' FUN

Jam Session
Saturday, 5 p.m. | Levering Lounge
Grab your instruments or bring your voice to participate in this night of impromptu music. Or, simply come to listen. Either way, there will be free food and drinks thanks to Homewood United for Music.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

"Bibliomania" opening reception and curators' talk
Sunday, 3 p.m. | George Peabody Library
The Sheridan Libraries will celebrate 150 years of collecting rare books with an exhibition viewing, refreshments, and featured remarks by some of the curators. If you are looking for a unique way to spend your Sunday, here is an opportunity to travel back in time.

TRAVEL THE WORLD

JHU Passport Fair
Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Levering Hall
Applying for a passport can be quite tedious when you can't snag an appointment at an acceptance facility. Avoid the hassle and head to the Sherwood Room with two forms of identification and payment for fees so you can apply in-person, on-campus.
