Campus memorial service planned for JHU graduate killed in Afghanistan

Friends, family organize book drive in Smedinghoff's memory

A memorial service for 2009 Johns Hopkins University graduate Anne Smedinghoff, a State Department diplomat who was killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan earlier this month, will be held on the university's Homewood campus this weekend.

The event, scheduled to coincide with Johns Hopkins Alumni Weekend, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Hodson 110. Formal attire is not required, but those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP at http://annesmedsmemorial.eventbrite.com/. More information is available on the event's Facebook page.

Smedinghoff, 25, was one of five Americans killed April 7 when the convoy they were traveling in was struck by a suicide bomber in southern Afghanistan. She was among a group of officials traveling to a school to donate books.

Friends have organized a book drive in Smedinghoff's memory to benefit Baltimore Reads, a nonprofit organization that provides free books to city children. Those wishing to contribute can bring a book to Saturday's memorial service, or view the event's Facebook page for more information.
