On the cover

For our fall issue's cover, Italian illustrator Shout teases "Saving Lives, Alternatively Speaking," about JHU Professor Thomas Hartung's decadeslong mission to advance alternatives to animal testing. In 1996, Hartung designed an alternative to the pyrogen test used to detect bacterial contamination—one that could be done using lab equipment rather than on a rabbit. Nearly 30 years later, the European Union has outlawed the rabbit version of that test.
