Description

How does diversity in media platforms—and lack thereof—affect democratic governance and participation? How do factors such as demographic representation and issue framing in traditional news and digital media affect fundamental components of democracy such as political participation, public opinion, and civil rights protections? What steps can be taken to counteract issues such as media bias and under-representation of minoritized communities?

During this interactive panel discussion, media scholars and practitioners will discuss the many important intersections of media diversity and democracy.

  • William Lafi Youmans, associate professor at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs and the Elliott School of International Affairs
  • Leanna Garfield, (she/they), social media safety program manager at GLAAD
  • Amalia Cordova, supervisory museum curator and chair of research and education for the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution.
  • Tamara Gilkes Borr, U.S. policy correspondent of The Economist

The panel discussion will be from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in Room 258 followed by a reception and happy hour in the Rome Breezeway.

This event is hosted by the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Media and Politics Initiative (MPI), SAIS Black Student Union, and SAIS Pride and organized by SAIS MPI Co-Directors Lisel Hintz and Narges Bajoghli.
