Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering Fall Seminar Series: Jonathan Doan
Description
Jonathan Doan, senior director of data engineering and architecture at Enovix Corporation, will give a talk titled "Materials Science Meets Data Science to Make a Better Battery" for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
This is a hybrid event; email dmse@jhu.edu for the Zoom link to attend virtually.
The successful commercialization of lithium-ion batteries depended in part on the development of intercalation electrodes. Silicon has long held promise as a higher capacity material for the negative side in Li-ion cells. However, there are substantial challenges with the incorporation of this alloying electrode material.
In this talk, we will discuss how Enovix's unique architecture enables the use of a 100% active Si electrode — as well as delivering other performance benefits. We will also explore the many ways that data science and systems accelerated our development of this product. We will do this with an eye toward why such data skills should be a key part of an industrial scientist's or engineer's toolbox.
