Description

Amanda Kraus, the executive director for disability resources and chief accessibility officer at the University of Arizona, will lead an interactive workshop titled "Ableism and Unconscious Bias: How to Reframe Disability to Promote Equity on Campus" for Student Disability Services.

ASL and CART will be provided; please email SDS-JHU@jhu.edu if you have questions and to request accommodations.

This interactive workshop will help you strengthen your skills in order to create a more inclusive Johns Hopkins community for disabled people. By analyzing examples from language, media, and design, we will problematize the dominant narrative on disability and identify prevalent stereotypes that contribute to ableist policy, practice, and attitudes. Borrowing from disability studies, we will explore the models used to frame disability. We will also challenge the idea that disability is a personal tragedy or problem and show how it is a phenomenon created by the design of our environments with far-reaching political, social, and economic implications. This program will be recorded with access provided to the Johns Hopkins community.
