Description

Susan Pfeiffer, research professor of anthropology at the George Washington University, will give a talk titled "Contention and Repatriation of Cultural Objects and Human Remains" for the Johns Hopkins Academy.

This talk will focus on key themes of Pfeiffer's upcoming book Osteobiographies: The Discovery, Interpretation and Repatriation of Human Remains (Academic Press, 2022).

As there is growing societal interest in the repatriation of human bones held by institutions or discovered in unmarked cemeteries, Pfeiffer will draw analogies with parallel activities geared toward the return of cultural objects to the descendants of the people who made them. Whether objects or bones, there is a need to develop a broadly acceptable policy framework. The "repatriation movement" represents an opportunity for scientists to contribute definitive information to descendants and to efforts of restitution.
