Volunteers sought for Maryland Scholars Speakers Bureau

The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education is looking for volunteers to join its Maryland Scholars Speakers Bureau. Volunteers inform, motivate, and inspire eighth- and ninth-grade students statewide to prepare them for college and careers. The Maryland Scholars message increases students' awareness about the importance of rigorous coursework, college/career expectations, and the realities of life after high school. Eighty-three percent of students say their speaker influenced their academic decisions.

Volunteering requires a minimal amount of time away from work: a three-hour training session and four 50-minute classroom presentations—the equivalent of two half-days away from work. After training, volunteers select schools, dates, and times that are convenient for their schedules.

To register for the program and for training, visit the STEMnet website.

Special training dates for Johns Hopkins employees are scheduled on:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 1, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. (register for the morning or afternoon session) at Johns Hopkins at Eastern. Parking is free.
  • Friday, Dec. 2, 12:30 to 3 p.m., in Johns Hopkins Medicine offices in Bond Street Wharf, Suite 550, in Fell's Point.

The Johns Hopkins Shuttle makes frequent runs between campuses. For more information on shuttle schedules, visit the Transportation Services website.
